The author considers the peculiarities and significance of sociolinguistic competence in the aspect of formation of linguistic university students’ pronunciation skills. The reasons for the necessity to change the reference points in teaching English phonetics in the conditions of socio-phonetic variation are determined. The analysis of scientific works considering sociolinguistic competencies from the point of view of linguistics and linguodidactics is made. The tasks outlined by the author, of the sociolinguistic approach to the development of methods for improving the students’ pronunciation skills, are designed to ensure the solution of the strategic goal of modern education — preparing young people for intercultural communication.
