The author problematizes the status of “experiment” that is constantly used to characterize the work of E. V. Ilyenkov and A. I. Meshcheryakov with blind deaf-mute educatees in the Zagorsk boarding school. Some arguments of Ilyenkov’s opponents are critically examined. An attempt is made to identify the nature and limits of the Zagorsk experiment, to show its significance going beyond the bounds of defectology. The adequacy of understanding of the soul as an unsolvable mystery has been questioned, and the specificity of its understanding by Ilyenkov from materialist positions is analyzed. In conclusion the author discusses the questions posed to the theory of the communist ideal by its critics.
