In this work, the classic philosophical texts corps was reviewed to seek and find philosophical foundations of activity approach to human thinking. The author analyzes the problem of agency through the prism of E. V. Ilyenkov’s philosophical heritage. The philosophical question of the beginning of personality, conditions and basic principles of human abilities formation were considered in the context of the possibility of free action, conscious and reasonable goal-setting. The role of tool- and practice-based activity as the basis of agency is emphasized, as well as the importance of concrete-historical forms of communication for its formation. It has been concluded that the principles developed in the works of E. V. Ilyenkov are the key to understanding the problem of agency today.
