The historical conditions of formation and the content of the concepts of creativity by pioneers of philosophical thought’s main currents - Democritus and Plato - are discussed. The analysis of these concepts identified universal basis of creativity, and thus its nature, essence and the main characteristics of creative activity. A system of contradictions of creative activity, identified by the great philosophers, and a way to resolve these contradictions proposed by them, were shown.
